[edit]From Proto-Germanic *smukô (“smoke, nebulous air”), from Proto-Indo-European *smug- (“to smoke; a smoke”). Cognate with German Schmauch (“dense smoke”), Old Irish múch (“smoke”), Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō, “burn with smoldering flame”) and Old Armenian մուխ (mux, “smoke”).
