From German schaffen, from Proto-Germanic *skapjaną, cognate with English shape, Dutch scheppen, Old Norse skepja, skapa. Doublet of skabe. The sense "to serve, eat" is influenced by German Low German schaffen or Dutch schaffen (both of which are borrowed from (High) German).
