[edit]A merger of two related verbs:
- Middle High German staren, from Old High German starēn (“to stare”), from Proto-West Germanic *starēn (“to be fixed, be rigid”);
- Middle High German starren, from Old High German storrēn (“to be stiff”), from Proto-Germanic *starjaną (“to be fixed, be rigid”).
