Romanian

Etymology

[edit]

From a Vulgar Latin root *stancus, from a contraction of Vulgar Latin *stānticus (tired), from Latin stāns, stantis. Compare Aromanian stãngu, also Old Italian mano stanca (left hand); cf. also the etymology of Italian manco (left; originally 'maimed', 'faulty' 'imperfect').

Dan Ungureanu proposes an early borrowing from Germanic (compare dialectal German tenck).
