[edit]

From Middle Dutch remmen, from Old Dutch *remmen, from Proto-West Germanic *hrammjan, from Proto-Germanic *hramjaną. Historically derived from raam (window, framework) +‎ -en (denominative) affected by umlaut. However, most speakers won't percieve this assocation and would rather derive the verb from rem (brake) +‎ -en.
