pusė (half) +‎ sala (island), calque of Latin paeninsula. Compare similar calques in Latvian pussala, more distant Chinese 半島半岛 (bàndǎo), Danish halvø, German Halbinsel, Polish półwysep, Russian полуо́стров (poluóstrov), and so on.
