kræklingur

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Faroese

[edit]
kræklingur (Mytilus edulis)

Etymology

[edit]

Same origin as Icelandic kræklingur (mussel), related to Icelandic krækla (crooked branch) and Icelandic kræklóttur (gnarled, stunted).

Perhaps also influenced by Old Norse kráka (crow), as in Old Norse krákuskel (mussel).

Compare also Old Norse krækiber (crowberry), Norwegian krekling (crowberry) and Icelandic krækilyng (Black crowberry (shrub)).

See also Old Norse krakligr (slender, thin and weak).
