Uncertain. Related to Norwegian keila (channel), Middle Low German kēl (narrow bay). Perhaps ultimately related to Proto-Indo-European *ǵeyH- (to break open, germinate). Also related to Icelandic kíll (ditch, wedge).[1][2]
