From Middle Dutch cauwe, from Old Dutch *kāwa, from Proto-West Germanic *kahu (compare West Frisian ka), from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (to call, cry) (compare Lithuanian giedóti, Tocharian A kāk (he calls upon), Sanskrit गायति (gāyati)).
