haipakka

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Many dialectal variants (hailakka, haijakka, haitakka). hailakka may be the original as it is also found in Karelian, which also has Karelian hailata (to rush, run around). If so, it may be from hailakka (pale, faded, wishy-washy), as fast things have an indistinct colour. The consonant variations would be sound-symbolic.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhɑi̯pɑkːɑ/, [ˈhɑ̝i̯pɑ̝kːɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -ɑipɑkːɑ
  • Hyphenation(key): hai‧pak‧ka

Noun

[edit]

haipakka (colloquial)

  1. fast speed
    Me ajetaan aika haipakkaa.
    We're driving pretty fast.
