[edit]From Middle High German gumpen, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *gempaną, *gembaną (“to hop, skip, jump”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰemb- (“to spring, hop, jump”). Cognate with dialectal German gampen, English jump.
