[edit]From Vulgar Latin faucinus,[1][2] a diminutive of Latin faucēs (“throat, gullet”).[3] Alternatively, influenced by Spanish hocicar (“to root with the nose”),[4] ultimately from Latin fodere (“to dig”).
Cognate with Galician fociño. Compare also Spanish hocico and Asturian focicu.
