Swedish

Etymology

[edit]
According to NE: From Old Swedish forbiūþa, probably from Old English forbēodan or Old Saxon forbeodan.[1]
According to SAOB online: From Old Swedish forbiuþa, despite its early use in Swedish it is most probable that it is from Middle Low German.[2]
Both ultimately from Proto-Germanic *furibeudaną, from *furi- + *beudaną.
Cognate with Danish forbyde, Norwegian Bokmål forby, Norwegian Nynorsk forby, forbyde, forbyda, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan), English forbid, German verbieten, Dutch verbieden. Equivalent to för- +‎ bjuda.
