From Germanic (Proto-Germanic *brekaną (to break)) or Celtic, from Proto-Celtic *brīgos; compare Welsh bri (power), Old Irish bríg (force, power, value). Not to be confused with Proto-Balto-Slavic *bergtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ-, cognate with Proto-Germanic *berganą, Sicilian sbriga.
