[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *bene venūtus, presumably a calque of a Frankish term, derived from Proto-Germanic *wiljakwemô (“a welcome guest or arrival”), from which many modern Germanic forms descend, such as English welcome. By surface analysis, ben (“well”, apocopic form of bene) + venuto (“come”, past participle of venire)
