Perhaps a Romance derivation from Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰 (bandwa, sign);[1] alternatively from Old French bande (band). Compare Portuguese bandeira, Spanish bandera, French bannière and Italian bandiera.
