Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *akana, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *aganō (chaff),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *aḱanā. Cognates include Karelian and Votic akanõ, Veps and Estonian agan, Livonian agān, and German Agen and Ahne. Attested since the time of Mikael Agricola (16th century).

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

akana

  1. husk (of a grain); (in the plural) chaff (inedible parts of a plant whose seeds are eaten as grain).
Akanoiden erottamiseksi varhaisissa kulttuureissa heitettiin viljaa ilmaan ja annettiin tuulen puhaltaa pois kevyemmät akanat.
To separate out the chaff, early cultures tossed baskets of grain into the air and let the wind blow away the lighter chaff.
