[edit]From Proto-Finnic *morcijan, borrowed from Baltic; compare Lithuanian marti (“daughter-in-law”), Old Prussian mārtjan (“bride, sister-in-law”). Cognates in other Finnic languages include Estonian mõrsja (“bride”), Ingrian morssia (“bride”), Karelian moršien (“bride”), Veps murzei (“bride, sister-in-law”).
