Etymology

Earlier mocayre, from Middle French mocayart and Italian mocaiardo, mocaiarro, both from Arabic مُخَيَّر (muḵayyar, choice), past participle of خَيَّرَ (ḵayyara, to choose). Form probably influenced by hair. Compare mockado, moire.
