Etymology

[edit]

Named after the hamlet Leverkusen near Remscheid, the family estate of chemical industrialist Carl Leverkus (1804–1889), whose factory caused the development of the city, which lies some 25 km to the south-west. The name of the hamlet goes back to older Laverinckhusen and is thus a doublet of Leveringhausen (name of three places in Westphalia).
