[edit]From Latin Genua, possibly from the Ancient Ligurian word for knee. Compare also Latin genu; alternatively it may derive ultimately from a Celtic root *genu-, *genawa (“mouth (i.e. estuary”), making it possibly akin to the root of Geneva as well.
