Etymology

[edit]

From Contraction of ewíwo. The existence of o- and e- prefixes is a remnant of an ancient Volta-Congo noun-class system, and both forms likely existed in the Proto-languages. See Ede Nago oówo, Olukumi ẹ́ghíghó, proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *e-ɣíɣo, *o-ɣíɣo, ultimately from Proto-Edekiri *e-ɣíɣo, *o-ɣíɣo. Possibly equivalent to e- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ wíwo
