Last Update: 2024-12-03 15:26 UTC

EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution which uses many of the technologies and package formats pioneered by Puppy Linux. The distribution features custom container technology called Easy Containers which can run applications or the entire desktop environment in a container. Packages, desktop settings, networking and sharing resources over the network can all be controlled through graphical utilities.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I am very disappointed.
EasyOS does not allow Veracrypt or cryptsetup by default.
fscrypt, developed by Google, does not encrypt metadata.
fscrypt is not as reliable as Veracrypt or cryptsetup.

I was very happy to be able to use the Brave browser, but when I booted from RAM, I could not start Brave. Very disappointing.

easyos-img does not check digital signatures.
cheaksum is md5. md5 is not recommended. Other mainstream distros use sha256sum or sha512sum, use PGP and can verify signatures.

BarryK said on the forum, I don't know anything about LUKS, so don't know how to get it to work. I am disappointed.
How can you use Linux for years and not use LUKS?

I am alarmed and concerned when attention to detail is not paid.
I was very disappointed overall because my expectations were very high.
This distribution is a toy. Cannot be used for anything important.

6.5.3, actually.
In spite of a few problems with external toools, yes, give it a 10 (9.5 not available)

*** The Good
Never suspected EasyOS would be a life saver. It has been.
Or that it would allow a safe inet connection when attacks come from everywhere.
It did, Thanks to the ability to reload the unsafest presence on every system:
- The X11 Grapic System, or...

...ANY graphic system working wit Java.
Browsers try to minimise those weaknessses.
Better take the flaws for granted, and survive.
... That's what EasyOS does (if you are there).

*** The now trashed:
There's an old package of TOR browser, based on an old kernel.
For one of those reasons, it become an open door to insistent attacks.
Usually witout problems after a reboot. But... latelly to avoid.
Rater have a recent TOR system directlly available instead one
dependent from indirect updates (middleman corruption)
... Maybe later.

*** Meanwhhile:
Firefox with NoScript are now fairly reinforced with the new
"Each tool is a different user" strategy now followed by EasyOS.

*** In conclusion:
For me, is no longer an Easy Carry System. No...
... It's the only acceptable what to go into the dangers of the Inet.

I have been a user of puppyLinux for years starting with version 5.2.8 and going to version 10.0.6

I have used easyOS 4.5 and I found it rather different to use and I really wasn't to pleased with its odd way of doing things.

Recently I decided to give easyOS v6.0 the latest version a try. I downloaded it from the website as an image file.

Next the .img file was flashed to a 32Gb using the Balena Etcher application.

Booting was done using UEFI secure boot. It formed a boot loop with another UEFI secure boot operating system (LMDE)

So I think easyOS can bios boot if you can make it the only UEFI secure boot or alter the grub settings.

I switched over to BIOS boot and the process went smoothly. You can also make a password to boot up.

In this old fashioned themed operating system, I found a rich version of applications already preloaded. All one had to

do was look through the extensive menu. Chromium was there as the browser, LibreOffice already installed. A multitude of

media players and convertors. There were even four different package managers. Additional browsers such as Firefox, Chrome,

Vivaldi can be downloaded through the SFS system. There was also a unique file system that was saved on the flash drive.

There are lots more things I can say about easyOS. I saved Balena Etcher, documents, downloads, media files to this flash drive.

I made it to a ready to use utility tool. I felt like I was rediscovering puppyLinux all over again but it was now way more powerful

and easy to use. Basic apps were built in and you only had to study the menus to find them.

With this in mind I give easyOS version 6 a 10/10.
