[origin: US4339391A] Quaternary ammonium compounds of the formula 1 <IMAGE> (1) in which R is C8-C30-alkyl or alkenyl; R1 is alkyl, 2-hydroxyalkyl or alkenyl each having from 8 to 30 carbon atoms; R2 is C1-C4-alkyl or benzyl; A is a group of the formulae <IMAGE> B is A or C1-C4-alkylene, X and Y are hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that X and Y are not simultaneously methyl; m is 1 or 2; n is a number of from 1 to 20; and A(-) is an anion; a process for the preparation thereof, and their use as fabric softeners.
