  1. Antras et al. (2012) discuss the extension of this to the open economy, in which case we have: where and denote exports and imports of sector output. The share of gross output in industry that is used as intermediate inputs in industry (at home or abroad) is given by the ratio: Antras et al. (2012) argue that since they do not have information on international interindustry flows, and , this cannot be operationalised. To get around this issue, they assume that so that the share of industry ’s exports (imports) that are used by industry producers is identical to the share of industry output used in industry (at home or abroad). This concept is closely related to measuring backward and forward linkages in input-output analysis (see Miller and Blair, 2009).
