You might know those YouTube ads that ask you ‘What if … you had invested in Amazon, Facebook or Tesla early?’ Sporting directors have to ask themselves this question constantly. What if?

At times the transfer market can feel like the stock market. Especially the prices of young, talented players can go and up down just like start-ups at the New York Stock Exchange. In the post-Klopp era, Borussia Dortmund has established itself as a major investor in young prospects. At times their track record rivals that of Warren Buffet. Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Ousmane Dembele are Michael Zorc’s Amazon, Facebook and Tesla.

Now of course not every investment pays off in that way as players aren’t shares: they need to feel comfortable at the club as well as with the coach and most of all they need real opportunities. A lot of prospects did get a bunch of chances at Borussia Dortmund in the past decades. Others didn’t get – or didn’t want – as much time to impress BVB’s top brass.

Here we take a look at five of the biggest recent transfer ‘What ifs…?’ at the club. How did these promising players fare after leaving Brackel? Would they have a place in today’s Borussia Dortmund squad?
