Growlithe (Japanese: ガーディ Gardie) is a character in the game Detective Pikachu Returns. Growlithe is Sanjeev's partner and resides in the Denis Residence. Her acute sense of smell helps Tim and Detective Pikachu at various points in the game.

In the games

Detective Pikachu Returns

Growlithe is introduced at the start of the game alongside Sanjeev during Tim's first major case investigating the theft of the Aurora Drop. Growlithe is initially downcast as she feels responsible in being unable to guard the key to the storage room containing the Aurora Drop against the thief. It is later revealed that Growlithe's food had been deliberately contaminated by a Pokémon's Sleep Powder to lull Growlithe to sleep and allow the culprit to take the key.

Alongside Pikachu, Growlithe uses her sense of smell to locate key information related to the case, including finding Barnes's Ducklett, Turner's Cramorant, as well as finding the Pokémon responsible for the Sleep Powder.

Growlithe is later recruited by Pikachu in the final case investigating Unitas at the Pokémon Unity Lab. Growlithe's sense of smell is used to locate a hidden entrance into the building. Growlithe also helps Tim and the rest of the group escape from Unitas members by buying them time by battling against Unitas members. Growlithe is later brought in by Merloch alongside Luxray, Pangoro, and Galarian Darmanitan at the climax of the game under the effects of a Control Cube, although she is freed from its effects when Merloch (fused with Deoxys) accidentally breaks the cube controller.

Personality and characteristics

Growlithe is loyal to Sanjeev, who she nicknames Sanjee, as well as his trusted butler Barnes. She is also seen to be brave, being the first Pokémon in Tim's group to split off and battle against the chasing Unitas members, to allow the rest of the group to escape.
