The Baltimore Orioles
2007-08-13 15:31
by Cliff Corcoran

The Orioles are the only team to take a series from the Yankees since the A's won a rubber game in the Bronx on July 1. Now 25-22 under replacement manager Dave Trembley, the O's have gone 5-7 since taking two of three from the Yankees in Baltimore three weekends ago. Included in that 5-7, however, is a six-game split with the Red Sox which the O's just completed by taking two of three from the Sox at Camden Yards. On Friday night the O's rallied four four runs in the eighth against Eric Gagne and Hideki Okajima, then pushed accross the winning run against Okajima in the ninth following a leadoff double by Brian Roberts. Yesterday, the O's rallied for two in the eighth against Okajima and Gagne (in the opposite order) to tie, then won on a three-run Kevin Millar walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth.

So the O's are feeling good, but so are the Yanks, who should be extra determined to put Baltimore in their place as they visit the Stadium over the next three nights. The only problem is they'll have to start things off against Jeremy Guthrie, who has already beaten New York twice this season (12 1/3 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 1 HR, 4 BB, 10 K -- Johnny Damon hit the homer). The good news is that Guthrie's last start, which came against those inexplicable Mariners, was one of his worst of the season and he's allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 9 1/3 innings since last facing the Bombers, who are bombing a lot more now than they were back in Baltimore as they were suffering from a brief team slump that weekend. Of course the O's could say similar things about Chien-Ming Wang, who is coming off the worst start of his major league career tonight.

Jorge Posada is finally back in the lineup. Wilson Betemit curiously draws the start at first behind the groundballing Wang. Damon starts at DH, perhaps because of that homer. As for the O's, they have Melvin Mora, back, but have lost Jay Gibbons to the DL for the season following labrum surgery and Chris Gomez to the Indians via waivers (in case you didn't notice who started at third base for the Tribe yesterday). Sorry for cutting this one so close, folks. Game on!

I'll tell you. This ceremony at the Stadium for Alex is pretty darn cool. I just hope this doesn't follow the same path as Roger's farewell ceremony. Although I do get the impression that Alex's wife could do without all the attention that the Yankees bring. I hope she keeps her trap shut if she feels leaving NY is best for her.

if anyone missed it in the last thread, melky's got interesting numbers based on whether he's in the leadoff or 9th spot

looking at the numbers, it melky has been noticeably more patient when batting leadoff rather than 9th (.283 BA, but .368 obp leadoff vs .336 BA and only .358 obp batting 9th) but has much more power (.549 9th vs .424 leadoff) when he's not concentrating on getting on base

i can't find anywhere that i can break down P/PA by lineup spot, but i'd say that double fits the pattern we've seen from melky this year, attacking from the 9 spot ...

251 Tonight? There wasn't a hard hit ball between them that inning.

Tough call on Villone. I agree that he should not have come in (in that I am not convinced he should even be on the team). But they had two lefties coming up, so in theory he was the right call.

I can't fault Joe here. Viz has been overworked a ton. He brought in Villone with a 2 run lead and one runner on. That's mid leverage, but who else to go to besides Viz? Brower? Farnsworth?

As for Joba going for 2, his going 1 leaves him available for Wednesday which is the Hughes game. The only questionable move was going to Mo after he threw a lot of pitches last night, but he's Mo. Look, that's his first blown save since April 20th. I mean, the guy is going to mess up sometimes.

Rivera hasn't been overworked.

311 Being overworked doesn't have to be a season issue. Yesterday, Mo threw 30 pitches in a 1+ inning outing. Now, had he not been brought into a 6-1 game on Friday as well, he may have been more fresh today. I am not saying Mo was tired, but if he was, then it would definitely call into question the Friday appearance.
2007-08-13 19:34:46
320.   JL25and3
312 It would have been nice to get a little more out of Wang tonight, for just that reason. Neither Rivera or Chamberlain will pitch tomorrow, which leaves them Karstens, Villone, Farnsworth and Vizcaino.

Any word on when Brower will be back? Not that he's a savior or anything, but they sorta need someone who can eat up 2-3 innings in a blowout.

302 S'okay, just figure that Villone was either a piece that didn't work like it was supposed to, but Torre course-corrected (and got lucky doing so). I still don't like Villone in that situation, but perhaps Joe's options were limited. It's moot now, and oddly satisfying to boot >;)

Giambi was big- HUGE. Nice to have a bench. A bench like this for a change.

I thought they shoulda let Jabba go two. Mariano pitched an exhausting outing yesterday. Joba was already in the Bird's heads...I thought it was a really bad move to go to Mo then (even before the debacle).

317 I really wish the Yankees could get the O's to switch Bedard and Cabrera. Is it too late for Clemens to appeal? Seriously, Karsten will be hard pressed to give a solid five innings, which means Viz and Farnsworth will have to pitch high leverage innings. If the Yankees win tomorrow, it will be with the bats.

328 329 It's more than the pitches though...Mo had to warm up as well. Even though it wasn't taxing, there was no reason to use Mo in a 6-1 game. The Yankees have played .750 ball over there last 40 games.
SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY

According to Buster O:
If the Yankees don't make the playoffs, manager Joe Torre may well be dismissed, and Cashman might be shoved out of power -- "tagged out," to use the phrase of the club's executives. But Phil Hughes is here to stay, and so are Joba Chamberlain and most of the other young pitchers who make up what is considered, by rivals, to be the best collection of mound prospects in any organization.

339 Roberts got jammed, but he got a pretty good stroke on it...I think Abreu was undecided on how hard to charge the ball. The way it fell in surprised me...shallower than I thought.

Melky obviously played the previous bloop much better, but in fairness to Abreu, he had to make a perfect throw to get Redman, who was really motoring. I think between the way the ball fell in, and Redman's speed, he just couldn't compose himself to make a good throw the way Melky did.

341 I don't know..he's the closer, right. He should be able to make thre appearances in five or six days. I don't think Friday's appearance was really an issue today, but you may be right.

That said, I do wish Torre would use the games before off days more strategically. The Wednesday blowout loss was a perfect time to get Mo an inning of work without the risk that it would hurt his performance the next day.

Joba's so cool. He said he didn't even know who he was facing, just left-right-whatever, and he likes it better that way.

360 Good point. But that wasn't the only reason. The biggest reason to leave Joba in was that if the O's tied the game and the Yanks didn't score, you really don't want to see Krazy Kyle warming up for the tenth. (Which we did see, but fortunately that was the only work he got.)

359 The Brower promotion was indeed perplexing; Torre's explanation that he can 'pitch back-to-back days' rings hollow. 359 Since returning to the minors, Edwar is 11.1 IP, 6H, 1R, 1BB, 19K. I can't come up with one good reason why he isn't up here. If Cashman is worried Torre wont use him, then he should demand it.

situations like we saw here tonite don't occur very often ... looking at the gamelogs on baseball-reference, i found 3 similar examples in the last 3 years

2006

22 pitches on 4/23
28 pitches on 4/28
1 inning no runs on 4/29

23 pitches on 7/14
26 pitches on 7/16
1 inning no runs on 7/17

2005
7 pitches on 8/8
31 pitches on 8/10
1.1 innings no runs on 8/11

joe has used mo like this before in the past and mo has been successful, i don't have a problem with the decision to bring him in ...

362 Fine, but it wasn't like Joba was leaving the game for Farnsworth. He was leaving the game for Mariano Rivera.

I understand that Joba is practically God, but he does only have a handful of ML innings, and it was his first appearance in Yankee Stadium. Asking him to pitch a second inning and save a 1-run game may have been too much.

I'm not saying that leaving him in would be a bad decision (I do think he could have gotten the save). What I am saying is that taking him out in favor of Rivera is a sound decision.

i think the brower promotion was due to a couple of factors ... britton was either injured or just off the dl when the callup occurred ... there's the whole trust issue with joe and edwar ... brower was having a good year and i think they wanted to take a look at him and see what they had before they absolutely had to set the rosters for postseason eligibility ... i think if brower struggles much more, he'll be gone within a week or so ... then again, yaneverknow

368 I don't think Mo is far off from his best days (if you eliminate 2 bad outings, his ERA is almost as low as ever). Also, he didn't exactly get smacked around today. My only point was there was no reason to pitch him on Friday. I know Mo needs work, but it's August now. I think we've reached the point where Torre should only use Mo in high leverage situations. As I've posted many times before, over 19 of Mo's 46 appearance have come with the team ahead or behind by at least 4 runs. That is simply too high a percentage.

367 Huh?

I'm aware that Joba was not removed for Kyle and that he was removed for Mo!

My point was that by removing Joba for Mo, you force Farnsworth to pitch the tenth if there is a tenth. Are you saying that's not true, or that it's not a bad thing?

360 Agreed. You can bitch about Joe all you want (I've done my share), and he's not a very creative guy, but there's only so much youth you can throw at him at once. Brower had decent numbers and he's a vet...it's not that inexplicable that he would be brought up to eat some innings with Proctor gone.

People constantly bitch and moan about Britton's absence, but I haven't seen anyone talk about the nature of his injury and his recovery. I want to see him up here as well, but he seems almost more useful as a symbolic stick to beat Torre and Cashman with, no matter how few innings he's pitched...for several weeks, no one even mentioned he was on the DL.

I think Edwar will be back, and hopefully his second audition will go much smoother (with a more regular schedule), especially with Joba and Hughes greasing the wheels for the new wave. And hopefully Brower doesn't do too much damage (or his damage is contained to a couple of blowouts) before he's shipped out.

371 But what should Torre have done since the all star break, when there really have not been that many close games? Yes, he should use him in higher leverage situations in the middle of games, but we all know that is not going to happen (nor would any manager use his 'closer' thus). If he doesn't pitch in the 6-1 game on Friday, or any of the surrounding blowouts, then you are looking at about a week between appearances. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

377 In April and May, I can accept the Mo needs work argument. It's August now and I think Mo can stay sharp with a few extra days rest when the opportunity presents itself. The dangers of over use are much more significant than under use.

373 You're right. I was going to argue that Rivera's stats (beside ERA) were off this year, but then I checked and they really look right in line with the last couple of years.

So, I'll make an emotional, perceptual argument: he doesn't seem as dominant to me this year. It seems that he has more 2 and 3 ball counts, and that he is giving up more fly balls. His BB and K look really good; his H totals are up some (but overall his WHIP is almost identical).

I'm not particularly optimistic about tomorrow, either, but don't forget: the Orioles aren't really very good. They've been shut down by some Jeff Karstenish pitching before, and they will be again. Why not a big night for Jeff tomorrow?

Yeah, probably not. But not inconceivable.

2007-08-13 20:37:58
382.   williamnyy23
378 Here's a quick illustration. On July 25 and 29, Rivera pitched in a 7-1 and 10-6 game, yet, he didn't pitch in 4-2 and 7-5 losses on July 28-29. In each instance, the Orioles scored late inning runs to bolster their lead.

Similary, on August 2, Mo could have been used against the White Sox when the Yankees were trailing 11-9. He hadn't pitched since 7/29, so that would have been a good spot to get an inning of work. Instead, Kyle gives up two runs in the 8th and then Torre uses Mo the next day in a 7-1 victory (and then again the following day in a 16-8 win).

I'm sorry, but I see no logic in that pattern of use.

0 Days 9.2 3.72
1 Day 12.1 0.73
2 Days 8 1.12

386 Bingo. How many managers use their closers before the ninth inning in close games where the team is trailing? Especially on the road (as was the case for the games referenced on the 27th and 28th against Baltimore).

Does anyone realistically expect Mo to be brought in a game in the 7th inning with his team trailing 3-1, just because the alternatives are so much suckier? This stretches the concept of "high leverage" to the order of a lab experiment. Maybe in the playoffs or in the final week of a pennant race, but not for games in July.

This isn't an RJ or Sheffield type dead horse argument yet, but it's starting to get there.

They have an ace and a few serviceable guys with a good bullpen. I could care less what the pythagreon record is, they have the best team in the AL West. Although, I don't think they can overtake the Angels, but I still think they will make the playoffs, and either the Yankees or Boston will not.

Of course I hope I am very very wrong. But if we miss, I'd rather it be Seattle over the fighting Leylands, who couldn't even make a series against a .500 team in the World Series. 423 It is just sensationalistic fodder to keep those below twenty-one, and those with IQ's about the speed of Moose's fastball tuning in.

He also says that the Yankees don't have any pitching and too much offense, so they won't make it. But yet he claims that Atlanta will make it because they have tons of offense and only two pitchers. There is a reason not one team has offered him a real job since leaving the Mets.

But hey, just be happy they took their lips off Tiger Woods' ass long enough to run something else. Unfortunately, that something else will be three hours of coverage on Vick and the NFL, and I believe it is almost a month before Goodell begins handing out HGH and Steroids like candy. He has to finish up burying all the evidence that professional football has ignored such evidence of concussion related injuries and depression and suicide. Oh shit, I forgot, he has to complete his utter screwing over of former players first. Sorry, it is just so frustrating to watch all the coverage of PED's in baseball while football gets a free pass, while it runs rampant on every team to this day. ESPN did try to illustrate that once, but the NFL threatened to pull their television contract. No more talk of steroids and PED's in the NFL, or else! I about fell off my chair when I saw them run a special on concussions.

424 Don't forget how the NBA is labeled the "thug league" while the NFL has had hundreds of arrests just since 2000. The only ones you really hear about for more than an initial announcement, though, are ones like Vick, Pacman Jones here in Vegas, or Tank Johnson violating probation by keeping an arsenal in his house. Not sure if the thread will still be active, but I'll answer a question directed to me.

372 Sure, because Joba was removed for Rivera we would have been forced to use Farnsworth in the 10th.

But the bigger point, is that no one should expect to need the tenth inning when you are brining in Rivera to protect a 1 run lead.

It is still a sound decision on Torre's part.

On the Mariners:
If they're that good, Vandelay, how come they've scored fewer runs than the Indians have, and allowed just eight fewer than the Indians have allowed? Which is really good: their pitching, or their offense?

428 I don't know what that means, "no one should expect to need the tenth." Do you mean that everybody should assume that there is no chance whatsoever that Rivera would give up a run? Obviously not, that's ridiculous. So, since we all know that even top closers sometimes give up runs, it's relevant and important who will be available for the tenth in the event that the game does get tied up.
