Abstract

The present work is aimed at revising the terms “handicap” and “disabled persons” included in United Nations' non-binding legal instruments which are prior to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The goal is to provide translation solutions and updates according to inclusive and non-stigmatized language, as well as usage notes for the UNTERM database. To this end, we will review the evolution of the international legal framework of disability as well as its terminology and the traits of inclusive and non-stigmatized language. We will also define the concept of quality and we will establish a functionalist methodology for analysis comprising macrotextual and microtextual factors. A corpus of four non-binding legal international instruments has been compiled in order to analyze the terms selected in their context, following a qualitative and descriptive methodology, so as to reflect on the social and legal implications of their use.
