Throwback Thursday: Ferrari F40

Welcome to throwback Thursday, the day Art of Gears look back at classic cars from the past. We talk about the history, specifications and facts about the car. This week’s throwback is the Ferrari F40.

The F40 is definitely one of the most iconic Ferrari’s ever manufactured. First revealed to the public in Maranello at the Civic Centre in 1987, this model was created as a limited edition supercar and was the final Ferrari to be approved by Enzo Ferrari.

During the production stage, Ferrari planned to only manufacture 400 units, however after seeing an increase in demand by the public and potential buyers, Ferrari built 1,311 units that were manufactured and produced meaning purchasing one now is expensive, if you can find any on the market.

The price of the Ferrari F40 when it was first released on the market in 1987 had a retail price of under $400,000 however in 2022 the price has dramatically increased from between $1m to $2m depending on the condition, mileage and colour.

In 2021, a rare F40 was sold at British auction for more than £1m, it was blue (based on the Porsche) with silver chrome wheels. Ferrari built this model in red initially however some buyers ordered colours including blue and black meaning to find an F40 in this colour is rare and hard to find on the market.

The most famous people in the world to own this model include Nigel Mansell (F1 championship driver), Gianni Agnelli (Late Head of Fiat Group) and Sir Anthony Bamford (Son of JCB founder)

This model was designed to compete with the Porsche 959 which meant it had to be fitted with a powerful engine which could deliver power, speed and exceptional handing to whoever was lucky enough to be behind the steering wheel. The engine fitted was a twin-turbo 2.9litre V8 which was capable of delivering an estimated 470bhp and was able to exceed speed of 200mph.
