Eating out for 20 in Queens

I'm bringing 13 high-school theatre kids to NYC in a month, staying in Long Island City, Queens. I'm looking for places that will welcome 13 exuberant, exhausted theatre kids along with 7 adults and happily serve them food we can't get in our little Seattle-adjacent community. [more inside]

NYC-Cat-Filter: Vet Recommendation (Queens preferred)

Our beautiful companion Ada needs a new vet. She is FeLV-positive, but has been healthy and happy for the year she's been with us. We're in Jackson Heights, and are, for various reasons, disenchanted with the neighborhood guy we've been seeing. The local vet has been calling, and telling us she needs new vaccinations, but we really don't want to go back to him. [more inside]

What are these NY neigbourhoods?

I'm trying to pinpoint the names of some NY neighbourhoods for a project, but as a non-local I'm finding it super hard. Can you give me the real deal (non-broker) take? A) Decatur St — this one Google tells me is Flushing on the south side of the road, Ridgewood on the north side, but Brooklyn/Bushwick on Irving Ave? B) Division Place — Greenpoint, East Williamsburg or ?? All thoughts appreciated!

Do you recognize these comics/illustration prints?

I rescued this gorgeous pair of framed prints from a thrift store in Astoria. They looked so familiar to me, like something I'd seen before by an illustrator or comics artist I knew, but had passed up previously. But I can find no record of what they might be. They're each in a limited edition of 50, initialed MAM or MANI. The orange one is a surreal Map of the Known World, and the purple one is an adorable haunted-house rock band. Do you recognize them?

NYC moving company recommendations

So, I'm in the market for a moving company. All of my previous moves have involved fairly informal, relaxed building regimes where it was OK to use a "man with van" service from the Village Voice classifieds or random strangers from TaskRabbit to move in or out of the building. This new place is a little different. They're more uptight. Among other things, they require a certificate of insurance from the moving company in order to approve the move-in. [more inside]

Place in Astoria, Queens for a casual wedding with fewer than 10 people?

A pair of my friends would like to get married quickly (politics!), but they'll only be able to get to NYC on the 30th. After the one-day waiting period, they can get hitched on New Year's Eve sometime in the afternoon, but the Marriage Bureau is, of course, closed. Do you know of a place that wouldn't mind us taking up space for 15 or 20 minutes, tops, that early afternoon? [more inside]

Good Copy/Print places in NYC?

I run a city-wide trivia company that's been growing pretty quickly in the last few months. Iconic buildings/symbols of Astoria or Queens

I'm wanting to do a project similar to this, but for Astoria (specifically, if possible) or Queens (generally, if that works out better). So basically, I'm looking for suggestions of iconic people/places/things that represent the neighborhood and/or borough, and would evoke fond memories for folks who have lived there. I'm not going to be taking photos, so I'm not limited to things that currently exist or that are concrete (as a terrible example of this, I mean that an apple could represent "the Big Apple"). I've already thought of Shea Stadium and the World's Fair stuff in Flushing Meadows (QMA, Unisphere, NYState buildings, etc.) What am I missing, Queens-folk?

Inspiration, Strike me!

I love to stop and draw when I take walks in New York. I'm inspired by architectural details and monumental perspective, contrasts of space and light. Usually I wander aimlessly until I find an interesting spot to sit with my sketchbook, but that's a bit tougher when it's 20 degrees outside. I'm in the process of setting up weekly sketching adventures with a novice artist friend, and I feel there should be some planning involved. Help me compile a list of potentially inspiring places we can sit and sketch in the city without our fingers freezing off. [more inside]

Hot happenings in Queens?

Where can I find event listings for the greater Queens area? Before I moved to Queens, I would check out places like Time Out NY, the skint, and Nonsense NYC to find interesting things to do on the weekends. But now I'm realizing just how Manhattan- and Brooklyn-centric the listings are. Does anyone know of any good sources for more local events? (We have a car, so Long Island resources are welcome too.) Or do I just suck it up and ride the F train 25 stops to go where the good stuff is happening?

Pick A Place To Party

I want to rent an event space in NYC. Where do I start? It's basically a wedding reception without the wedding, I'd like it to hold about eighty people, with an open bar and using my own caterers. Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for a sushi first-timer?

NYC-foodie-filter: A friend of mine wants to try sushi for the very first time. The game plan is to order a couple of pieces as an appetizer and either proceed to a full entree if she enjoys it or bail and order something different if it turns out that raw fish is not to her liking. Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for this culinary adventure? Shiny, tiny new apartment in Manhattan or affordable charm in Brooklyn?

Another NYC Real Estate Question: the SO and I, who have always lived in charming smallish walk-ups with leaky tubs/peeling paint in Queens-like proximity to 'the big city,' have been seduced by the siren song of new construction downtown.
