Finland's mild autumn weather is set to take a more wintry turn this week — with snow showers and subzero temperatures on the horizon.

Snowfall is expected across much of the country on Tuesday, Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander said, with temperatures during the day ranging from -2 degrees Celsius in the south to -12 in Finnish Lapland.

Southern and eastern areas could see up to 10 centimetres of snow by Tuesday morning, Lohtander noted, and the forecast suggests the white stuff is here to stay.

"We can enjoy snowy landscapes throughout the week, as temperatures will remain below freezing," he said.

With temperatures set to drop below zero, Lohtander added that this will lead to clearer skies and the reappearance of the sun over Finland as clouds clear. Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny across much of the country.

Finland was unusually or exceptionally warm this autumn, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

However, the long-term outlook for December suggests more seasonable weather is in store, with temperatures in the south set to be between zero to -5 degrees Celsius on average, while Finnish Lapland will see the mercury drop to between minus 10–20 degrees.

"In terms of temperatures, we will be slightly below average from Tuesday, whereas we are now above average," Lohtander said.
