There were over 30,000 more people unemployed in Finland during the month of August compared to the same period last year, according to data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

The ministry's figures revealed that the total number of unemployed jobseekers by the end of last month had climbed to 279,600.

There were also just over 54,000 job vacancies in August, less than half the number of a year ago when about 114,000 positions were advertised.

In a separate report published on Tuesday, Statistics Finland noted that unemployment was up and employment was down last month.

According to the number-crunching agency's data, there were 46,000 fewer people aged 15 to 74 in employment during August compared to one year ago, while there were 22,000 more unemployed people.

This puts Finland's unemployment rate trend at 8.3 percent — with the number of young people out of work increasing significantly.

"The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 18.0 per cent. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 6.4 per cent," the report outlined.
