The Cardinals and Adam Wainwright agree to a deal for 2019 - UPDATED

The specifics are unknown, though according to Saxon: "That Mozeliak quote makes it sound like it’s an incentive-laden deal." The 2019 season will mark his fifteenth season in the Majors, all of them being with the St. Louis Cardinals. We will keep you posted as more information is released! As of now, Adam Wainwright will be a Cardinal in 2019. UPDATE October 12: According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the contract with Waino is for one year at "an undisclosed low base salary, but two sources described how his new contract is rich in incentives". Goold also wrote that Wainwright will prepare for a starters role to start the 2019 season, but his contract is written to assure "he’ll be rewarded regardless of his role — which could be starter or reliever".

Cardinals name Mike Shildt Manager (again)

The Cardinals have dropped the "interim" from Mike Shildt's title. Since Shildt took over the Cardinals have gone 26-12, but perhaps more importantly, the weird negative energy around the clubhouse seems to have disappeared (which came first, the winning or the positive vibes, it is tough to tell). Only forty-five days into his tenure, the timing of the move is a bit of a surprise, but the move itself was fairly expected. The organization appeared to be positioning Shildt for the role ever since he was implanted as the Quality Control Coach for the team in 2017. As Craig Edwards pointed out on Twitter "If they want him as the manager, and aren't going to be swayed by these next four weeks, then four weeks of bad play would make it look worse if they then decided to hire him.". Overall, a good move for the Cardinals, albeit not super exciting. Though I bet Shildt is happy, so congrats to him!

Tommy Pham is gone; Viva Tommy Pham! There will be more to follow on this trade for sure. For now, know that Roel Ramirez is a twenty-three-year-old right-handed pitcher in AA, Genesis Cabrera has a great name, is almost twenty-two, is left-handed, and is a pitcher in AA, and Justin Williams, the most interesting of the three to this author, is an almost-twenty-three-year-old outfielder that recently made his major-league debut. Please note that none of these fellas are Chris Archer.

Alex Reyes is back on the DL; happiness is an illusion

After making his season debut yesterday, May 30, Alex Reyes will land back on the Disabled List with a right lat strain. You might recall that is his throwing lat. The Cardinals have recalled Austin Gomber. They have also recalled Luke Voit and optioned John Gant and Tyler O'Neill. The good news is that Carlos Martínez is scheduled to make a rehab start for AA Springfield tonight. His lat seemed fine while he was shooting baskets after the rec-league basketball game we were both watching had ended. With the off day on Monday, the Cardinals may not need another starter until next Saturday, which may allow Martínez to slot in that spot. In other injury news, Yadier Molina is back to baseball activities and may be cleared to play in the next few weeks.

Carlos Martínez has been placed on the 10-day Disabled List

Cardinals righthander Carlos Martínez has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to his last start on May 8 with a right lat strain. For those that may have missed it, that is his throwing lat. If all goes well, Carlos will be available again after May 18. Let's hope it does as he has has been the team's most valuable pitcher. In 50 innings, Carlos has put up a 1.62 ERA (over-performing a 3.41 FIP) with a 22.4% strikeout rate to a 1.5% walk rate, amassing 1.0 fWAR in eight starts. Also, he dances.

Cardinals expected to sign extension with Carlos Martinez

YES YES YES YES YES DO IT DO IT DO ITTTTTTTT I mean, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch in his weekly chat both the Cardinals and Carlos Martinez have expressed interesting in inking an extension as the right-hander is set to enter his first year of arbitration. In 2016, his age twenty-four season, El Gallo was good for 3.4 fWAR, 3.04 ERA, and 3.61 FIP. He posted the lowest strikeout rate of his career as a starter at 21.5%, but coupled that with the highest groundball rate of his career at 56.4%. Carlos is also very active in the St. Louis community, visiting local schools and providing aid to families in need through his foundation, Tsunami Waves. The foundation has also hosted several fundraisers in the area to help children locally and in the Dominican Republic. Carlos Martinez is a rising star, becoming a pillar of the community, and is a wonderful clubhouse presence. SIGN THE MAN, DO IT NOW!
