Joe's 2023 Week 8 Top 25

In what was a huge week for the Pac-12 it wasn't actually a big week for the rest of the top 10. I made some very slight adjustments based upon last weekend's results but really everyone held serve exactly as they were expected to. This is the most wide open the CFP has ever been and I'm going to buy a bunch of popcorn to get ready for the home stretch. I believe we're on our last week of byes this weekend so after that we should be getting full slates every Saturday (with the exception of Notre Dame possibly?). Only two power-5 conferences have more than one team still undefeated and only one conference still has the chance for a matchup of undefeated teams in its conference championship game. And that's the ACC! There are a lot of top 25 matchups remaining and there's still at least two top-10 matchups as well. The season is going to get a lot more fun from here!

Top 25:

01. Oklahoma (6-0) B12 (N/A) - They were on a bye week but nothing really changed for Georgia behind them so there's no reason to move them down.

02. Georgia (7-0) SEC (N/A) - Trailed immediately to Vanderbilt and then rattled off 27 straight before letting them score again. They're back to full sleep walk mode. It's hard to say they aren't the number one team based upon what they did to Kentucky but it's hard to say they are based upon how they've just been lethargic in every other game.

03. Washington (6-0) P12 (N/A) - I'm going to call it the second biggest win of the year in CFB because Oklahoma's is bigger based upon my rankings. Still, that was a huge win for us and we needed that way more than anyone else. There are some glaring problems for the team and, wouldn't you know it, they happen to coincide precisely with the players we've lost for the season. Dillon Johnson has been improving each week but we still need more out of the run game. It's tough to think about what could have been with Cam Davis back there and Matteo Mele still under center. On the defensive side we're really missing Davon Banks at corner and Zach Durfee at edge. Those guys were key to our depth and their absence was apparent on Saturday.

04. Michigan (7-0) B10 (+1) - This week I swapped Michigan and Ohio State. The reason for that is Michigan has put up 52 points in back to back weeks and not a single opponent has gotten more than 10 points against them this season. At some point we have to look past their non-conference schedule and assess that they're stomping Big-10 teams out of existence.

05. Ohio State (6-0) B10 (-1) - On the flipside of that, Ohio State did not do that to Indiana in their first game of the year. They've held all opponents to 17 or fewer points but their offense doesn't look nearly as good as Michigan's.

06. Penn State (6-0) B10 (N/A) - I have nothing to say about a week 7 non-conference matchup against the worst of the FBS independent teams. Hoping Ohio State evaporates them this week.

07. Florida State (6-0) ACC (+1) - Texas was on a bye but they swap places with FSU because FSU beat a 4-2 Syracuse team that is decent. That's now 3 quality wins for FSU to offset the mess that was the BC game.

08. Texas (5-1) B12 (-1) - I've got them ahead of O****n because they're getting better quarterback play and, remarkably, I think the D**ks are the only top 25 team with a worse head coach than Sark.

09. O****n (5-1) P12 (N/A) - No movement here for losing on a missed field goal. Lanning continues to Lanning which is what I have always predicted for this game. The guy just doesn't know how to take the points. Okay I get it you're an aggressive offense and that's your mindset every time... but lost in all this is the reason coaches go conservative is because it eliminates a lot of the big success/fail impacts. Convert one of those 4th downs and you probably win. Don't convert and you probably lose. If you kick or punt you're taking the middle ground and deferring your win/lose decisions until later. For a team that should have more talent than everyone they face except Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama they sure coach like a team that has less. A gambler mentality is for the less talented team and Lanning always coaches like it's his. But I get it... He's a lesser coach than DeBoer (and Smith) afterall.

10. North Carolina (6-0) ACC (+2) - They did Cristobal a favor because Miami can rest easy now knowing that the Mistake in Miami didn't cost them the playoffs. UNC and FSU don't play each other so really the ACC championship game is in the hands of Duke, who still plays both (and Louisville). I'm starting to think we might get undefeated UNC and FSU in the ACC title game.

11. Alabama (6-1) SEC (+2) - It's far from pretty but they keep winning. They're above the rest of the 1-loss teams because I would pick them to beat those teams but if we go just off margin of victory it's hard to argue they belong anywhere near the top 15 right now. Arkansas is 2-5... How do you only beat them by 3 at home?

12. Oregon State (6-1) P12 (+3) - I'm not going to give too much credit for the UCLA win because a lot of it was Dante Moore being Dante Moore and throwing 3 interceptions (one a pick-six). They gave up more points to UCLA than I expected and, after this past weekend, I really don't understand how they let WSU bully them. I'm starting to see Oregon State fans talk about how they think they can beat Washington at home like... guys, you have 3 more games before then. Maybe you should worry about Arizona, Colorado, and Stanford first? All of which are plenty capable of wrecking your season.

13. Ole Miss (5-1) SEC (+3) - I dinged them a little for the LSU and Arkansas games but then both of those teams did the same thing to their opponents last week so I guess that's just how it's going to be playing LSU and Arkansas this year? They were on a bye and play at Auburn this weekend. I hope they keep winning so we can get more Lane Kiffin trolling. He's probably the best coach in America at it.

14. USC (6-1) P12 (-4) - We all saw that game, right? So my statement on Twitter is what I will echo here: USC last year had an INSANE plus turnover margin. Like... deal with the devil level stuff. This game felt like that payment came due all at once. 3 interceptions, 3 fumbles (2 lost), 6 sacks, and 11 tackles for loss. And of course it was against Notre Dame where divine intervention in the game has never been disproven.

15. Duke (5-1) ACC (+2) - Duke is sitting pretty in the ACC with a chance to control its own destiny and get into the playoffs still. They face all three of the other contenders (who all miss each other as we've discussed before) so if they win out they're in the ACC title game and would have a 4-1 record against ranked opponents entering that.

16. Tennessee (5-1) SEC (NEW) - They got a good, defensive win against Texas A&M. Now they get a road game against Alabama. This is a good chance to get back into the playoff discussion.

17. Louisville (6-1) ACC (-6) - That Pitt loss is inexplicable. I held them here only because they have the head to head over Notre Dame by a decent margin.

18. Notre Dame (6-2) IND (+4) - Huge win over USC but they also got massively outgained. This game for SC was the definition of shooting yourself in the foot (or maybe someone up above did). I'm not sure the Irish get past Clemson in 3 weeks but if ever a team needed a bye it's now. Good thing they finally get theirs (what a dumb schedule... seriously).

19. LSU (5-2) SEC (NEW) - Welcome back to the rankings LSU! They are sporting one of the top scoring offenses in the country now. The problem is they can't stop anyone either. They get Army and then a bye the next two weeks so don't expect much movement here until after their matchup with Alabama in November.

20. Missouri (6-1) SEC (NEW) - That was a great time to catch a hungover Kentucky team that forgot to stop fleeing when they left Georgia. Now they get what should hopefully be a tune up game against South Carolina followed by a bye. After that it's their turn to get scorched by Georgia. Fun.

21. Air Force (6-0) MWC (NEW) - I've had my eye on them all season but this is the first time I've ranked them because their schedule is just not good. They beat previously ranked Wyoming who beat previously ranked FSU who beat... You get the point. It's a bit of MWC musical chairs this year.

22. Utah (5-1) P12 (NEW) - Utah crawls back into my rankings via a win over a reeling Cal team. Expect them to get USC's full attention. I don't think they have the offense to keep up but they could keep it close in the first half.

23. Kentucky (5-2) SEC (-3) - There's no shame in a loss to a 5-1 SEC team so I won't punish them too much but Kentucky needs to stop worrying about finding money for more dudes and start worrying about finding touchdowns for more wins.

24. UCLA (4-2) P12 (-3) - This was the one team I was unsure about ranking this week and it's because their offense is a dumpster fire. But I think they'd still beat Iowa (which isn't saying much) so I kept them at 24 because I also can't find a reason not to rank Iowa. The list of contenders for these last 2 spots actually isn't all that great either.

25. Iowa (6-1) B10 (NEW) - Every year there's a team that is ranked but you can't explain why beyond the results column. This Iowa team is it. Their only purpose in college football is to drag their opponents down to a previously unknown 10th circle of hell where offense is forbidden. They win games while losing in every single statistical category. It's incredible. It's painful. It's freakin' Iowa football. And no, they will not reach 325 points for the season, even if they made the playoffs and won it all and finished 15-1 they would still only get to around 310 points scored.

Out:

14. Washington State (4-2) P12 - You can't lose like that and stay ranked. This was a massive crash and burn for the Cuogs. Somewhere out there are posts from 3 weeks ago of Cuogs bashing UW for barely beating Arizona. They deserved this.

18. Maryland (5-2) B10 - Just like Kentucky, this is another team that had a letdown after falling well short of hopes in a big matchup. You can't follow up an Ohio State loss with a home loss to Louisville.

19. Wisconsin (4-2) B10 - Lost to Iowa.

23. Miami (4-2) ACC - I unfortunately didn't catch their game but UNC is a better team so the score and the play-by-play pretty well reflects what expectations were. I would say I wish Cristobal stayed at O****n but I'm not sure they even upgraded.

24. Wyoming (5-2) MWC - The loss to Air Force ends their hopes of a CFP selected bowl game and propels Air Force into the rankings. They've still got a lot to play for in the MWC though.

By Conference:

ACC - 4

B10 - 4

B12 - 2

IND - 1

MWC - 1

P12 - 6

SEC - 7
