Biography

Don Marean is chairperson of USTA District 9. He owned and operated Standish Hardware & Feed Co. for 30 years before selling the business to his employees in 2003. He founded Lindon Farm, Inc. with his wife, Linda, in 1988, and they ran it continually until 2009 as a Standardbred breeding facility where they stood up to five stallions at one time. In 2010, they retired from breeding but continue to own racehorses. They still live on the farm and continue to care for the retired horses that they own. In 2023 they put an agricultural conservation easement on their entire property to protect it in perpetuity as a Forever Farm. Marean is a director of the University of Maine (Orono) Board of Agriculture. He is also a director of the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association and past president and director of the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association. Former chairperson of the Land for Maine’s Future Board, he was appointed by the governor. He was also appointed by the governor to serve on the Animal Welfare Advisory Council, representing Maine Farm Bureau and large animals. Marean served four years in the Maine House of Representatives (2005-2008) and was re-elected to the House in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. In between those terms, he was the spokesman for the industry at the Statehouse as its lobbyist. He also served as a selectman in his community and is a corporator of Gorham Savings Bank. The Mareans received the Distinguished Service Award from the MHHA in 2003. Don received the Appreciation Award from Harness Horsemen International in 2013 and in 2020 received the President’s Award from USHWA. In 2015, he was elected to the board of trustees of the American Horse Council in Washington, D.C. In 2022 the Governor of Maine appointed him to the Maine Harness Race Commission. Don serves as the USTA ex officio director and president of Standardbred Transition Alliance. He and Linda have three daughters, Shirley, Dawn and Christine; two granddaughters, Whitney and Blake; a grandson, Briar; and four great-grandsons, Tyler, Jayden, Brodie and Brantley.
