UConn men’s hockey notched its second ranked victory in as many games, taking down the No. 15 UMass Lowell River Hawks 4-1 at the Tsongas Center on Friday night.

With goaltender Tyler Muszelik likely out for the remainder of the first half, the Huskies turned to Callum Tung in his first collegiate appearance. The freshman stopped 26 of 27 shots that came his way and earned the win in his debut.

UConn’s power play powered the offense, scoring a pair of goals. The unit now has five goals in the last five games after coming up empty in the seven contests prior to that stretch.

Ryan Tattle, Joey Muldowney, Hudson Schandor and Jake Percival found the back of the net in the victory.

Both teams traded chances in the opening period but neither converted. UConn’s best opportunities came late when Tabor Heaslip got turned away on a back-door tap-in and Viking Gustafsson Nyberg hit the post, but both pucks stayed out.

Early in the second period, Tattle sprung free on a breakaway but never got a shot off after a failed deke. He wouldn’t be denied twice, though. A few minutes later, Kai Janviriya sent a cross-ice pass to the junior, who drilled a one-timer to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Not long after that, UConn got the first power play of the day but came up empty despite moving the puck well and creating some good chances. UMass Lowell also went on the man-advantage in the second period, only to have it ended prematurely by a too many men on the ice penalty. That set up just under a minute of 4×4 hockey followed by a short power play for the Huskies.

This time, they took capitalized. With nine seconds left on the penalty, Ethan Gardula found Muldowney in front, who flicked the puck in to double the lead. UConn went into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead and 41 seconds still left on another power play.

Once again, the Huskies’ man-advantage unit answered the bell. Schandor knocked a rebound under UMass Lowell goalie Henry Welsch’s pad to put UConn up 3-0 just 29 ticks into the third period.

The River Hawks finally got on the board when they converted a 2v1 with 7:23 left, then the Huskies tossed them a lifeline by taking a penalty just moments later. Despite a few shaky moments, UConn’s penalty kill stepped up to keep the lead at three.

Finally, Percival delivered the dagger when he deked two defenders and beat Welsch five-hole to make it a 4-1 game, which proved to be the final score.

With the win, UConn grabs its first road victory improves to 7-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Hockey East. Next, the Huskies will try to sweep UMass Lowell in the second game of the road series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. ET.
