UConn men’s hockey fell to the Merrimack Warriors 5-2 at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Saturday night. It’s the first time the Huskies have been swept this season.

The Warriors opened the game with three straight goals, won the second period 3-1 and slammed the door with an empty-netter. Joey Muldowney and Hugh Larkin had the goals for UConn.

In net, Tyler Muszelik stopped 19 of 24 shots. The Huskies scored on the power play for the third consecutive contest but they didn’t have nearly enough punch on offense beyond that.

For the fourth straight game, UConn’s opponent scored first. The puck bounced off the board boards and found David Sacco, who snuck it past Muszelik to make it 1-0.

The Huskies nearly tied it later in the opening period on a shorthanded 2v1, but Hudson Schandor got turned away by an unbelievable save from Merrimack goalie Nils Wallstrom. UConn didn’t do much on offense beyond that, generating just seven total attempts in the period.

After the intermission, the Warriors continued to pile on. First, a shot from the blue line floated in past a screened Muszelik. After that, they converted on a power play to make it 3-0.

Despite the deficit, the Huskies got on the board with a power play goal of their own from Muldowney — only to give one up down the other end just 33 seconds later. They went into the third period down 4-1.

UConn quickly got itself back in the game, though. Just three minutes into the final stanza, Filip Sitar found Larkin for the tap-in to cut the deficit down to two. The Huskies kept the pressure on and made it difficult for Merrimack to exit the zone, but never found another goal. The Warriors scored an empty-netter in the final minute that sealed the three-goal defeat.

With the loss, UConn falls to .500 for the first time this season at 5-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Hockey East play. Next, the Huskies will host the No. 2 Boston College Eagles at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Friday.
