Injury report

UConn will have the same 10 players available on Friday as it had in its first two contests. Ayanna Patterson remains out with a shoulder injury, though Geno Auriemma shared a positive update on her progress.

“Yanna’s doing everything except contact stuff right now,” he said. “She’s come back pretty good. She’s on her way.”

As for Azzi Fudd, she’s nearing a return but won’t play against UNC.

“Azzi’s probably the closest. So I would expect that we would see her at some point soon. Don't get your hopes up, not this Friday,” Auriemma said. “We’ll take it game by game at this point.”

Even though Fudd was firmly been ruled out by her coach, the Tar Heels aren’t necessarily buying it. They’re preparing as if she’s going to be out there.

“I think she’s very close to being back,” UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. “We have a feeling she’ll play on Friday.”

Fudd has made a surprise return from injury in the past. During her freshman year, she sat out 11 games with a stress reaction in her foot. Leading up to a matchup with DePaul, Auriemma said that Fudd was “not ready to go” — but then she ended up playing 23 minutes. As it turned out, Fudd changed her mind after shoot-around and decided to give it a shot.

Could something similar happen on Friday? It’s unlikely — though as we’ve seen, not impossible.
