Not only is UConn set to celebrate Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey’s 40th season with the program on Wednesday night, history will also be made. Barring the upset to end all upsets, Auriemma will surpass Tara VanDerveer to become the winningest coach in college basketball history — men’s or women’s. He currently sits at 1,216.
There will be plenty of festivities surrounding the contest. Outside Gampel Pavilion, UConn’s Husky Heritage Museum inside the Alumni Center will open at 4 p.m. and features a special display for Auriemma and Dailey’s 40th season along with other exhibits and memorabilia. The Dairy Bar has a special flavor, sundae and milkshake in honor of the pair and a fan fest will be held on Fairfield Way from 4-7 p.m. featuring giveaways, booths and a goat petting zoo.
Inside the arena, doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a ceremony for Auriemma and Dailey will commence at 6:30 p.m. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and while nothing has been announced, there will almost certainly be some festivities after the final buzzer sounds to celebrate the new record.
