Kade Roberts (DSaF OC) Analysis
If ever there was someone deserving to serve as the example of "there is no happy ending," it's Kade.
Throughout his story, Kade is a young boy who struggles to understand what he wants while in a situation where he needs to make choices. Should he keep Henry alive or allow him to die? Should he trust Dave as Jack eventually comes to do? Even while knowing he’s murdered several children like himself. Did he ever have a happy ending? We’ll get back to that one later.
From the moment he died Kade was forced with a choice, does he trust Jack enough to follow him? Despite knowing only hours prior he followed Henry and now he was no longer alive. Or does he not take Jack’s hand, and remain alone. He had already just gone through hell being murdered in such a gruesome manner after following someone he trusted, and now only hours after that trauma is he being forced to make another choice. One that links back to Henry, though unintentionally. He take’s Jack’s hand and decides though hesitantly, to trust him and come with him. Good job Kade, he is still your friend.
When Kade first encounters Dave alongside Jack, all he can see is Henry. They may not look the same, and by this point Kade is unaware of his affiliation to Henry. But his request for Jack to lure 5 children into the backroom, and later finding out even though Jack didn’t fulfill his request Dave lured and murdered those children instead. It’s like seeing Henry all over again. But this isn’t it, he’s seen this man before. Likely several times. He spent much time with Henry at Fredbear’s, and inevitably he would’ve encountered Dave a few times being so close with Henry. In every aspect to Kade, Dave is just another Henry. Being a child, a child who is forever unable to mature and in the past few years has been forced to face an abundance of emotions. From neglect from his father, to being murdered by the man he thought he could trust. The ONLY person he thought he could trust when he was alone with no parental guidance or friends.
Then he was forced to see it all again in the form of Dave. That’d be scary for any child, right? And eventually he’s forced to make a new choice, does he trust Dave? It’s been well over a decade by this point, he’s helped Jack free 2 sets of souls but has also been there for 2 sets of murders. And has the constant reminder in the back of his mind that everything he and Jack have been going through will lead to them seeing Henry again. Will lead to KADE seeing Henry again. He knows it’s inevitable that he’ll have to face him, but for years he’s forced to have that reminder sit with him until it comes true. Dave is back, though in the flipside. He’s just been there for everything that's happened to Dave, and now he’s being told that it was the “unreasonable side” of Dave. Think about how much that is to take in for a child as is. But now he’s met with Jack, a man he’s been with since 81’ beginning to trust Dave. Trust the man he’s associated with and saw Henry in since the beginning.
That's a hard choice, but no matter what he picks the reality is it doesn’t matter because as long as Jack allows him to, Dave will be with them. It’s a cruel reality and one Jack seems entirely blind to. Blind to the fact Kade associates him with Henry, and blind to the fact he’s forcing Kade to stay with the person he associates with Henry. And unintentionally isn’t actually giving him any choice. It doesn’t matter if he does or doesn’t trust Dave, he’s here to stay.
At the end of it all Kade is forced to come face to face with the man who started it all. During the fight he has to watch each person he’s come to know “die” in a way.
“You will never have a happy ending.” That's it, that's all it took and suddenly he’s on the ground with everybody else. And Henry was right, he will never get a happy ending.
If he lives, he will end up following in Henry’s footsteps. Becoming his successor to do just as horrific of things. And if he doesn’t, then as what happened now, he dies. And at the end of it all, even when it's finally time for him to be freed, he still doesn’t get a happy ending. Because after everything he’s forced to realize Jack isn’t going with him. It’s been years, decades, and this was supposed to be his happiest day. But now he’s being told he has to say goodbye.
It’s true, no matter his ending he’ll never get a happy ending.
OTHER ENDINGS
We’ve seen the true ending, so let's look at this in a light where Jack DID murder those children. Or if Jack worked with DaveTrap.
Going back to when Dave first asks Jack to lure those children. If Jack accepts and does lure those children. Jack will attempt to reassure Kade he wouldn’t do it, but the moment Kade leaves Jack silently breaks his trust and inevitably Kade will find out. And now suddenly the man he’d by this point been for years is not better than the man who murdered Kade. What do you do then? He’s alone no matter what now. He can stay, but that isn’t the man who took him with him so Kade wouldn’t be alone anymore.
And if Jack goes along with DaveTrap he’s forced to once again watch Jack go from someone he’s trusted for over a decade to either JackTrap or Legacy Jack. And in any other ending in 1 or 2 where the children aren’t freed Kade will never be able to get his happiest day as long as there are still children to be freed and as long as Henry is still present.
This just feels like something he would say
little billy dialtown could easily destroy dave miller dsaf
I feel like i dont talk enough about just how fucking good the phone guy dialogue in dsaf is. I wish i could be as eloquent as them phones, especially their speeches which are all so magnificently written.
at one point in the roger dlc, roger mentions a time where peter tried (and failed) to attack the scuttlers with a pitchfork. that's it, that's my request. i would absolutely love to see this scenario drawn
HERE!! Thank you for requesting something :)) I hope you're chill with a traditional doodle as I got the motivation to do this in class haha...
