Greetings from pixiv.
The Yugawara Onsen Mural Illustration Contest opens on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024.
This contest is the first in a series celebrating pixiv's sponsorship of the Manuscript Writing Package at The Ryokan Tokyo YUGAWARA, a hot spring inn in Yugawara that offers exciting accommodation plans for creators.
In this contest, we are looking for bathhouse-style illustrations inspired by the town of Yugawara to decorate the women's bath at The Ryokan Tokyo YUGAWARA.
Yugawara is a hot spring town with 1300 years of history, beloved by many famous literary figures.
We look forward to seeing your unique interpretations of this historic town.
The winner of the First Prize will receive 100,000 JPY (approx. 675 USD), and their artwork will be featured as a mural in the women's bath at The Ryokan Tokyo YUGAWARA. In addition, the winner will receive a pair of overnight stay tickets for The Ryokan Tokyo YUGAWARA.

Yugawara Onsen: A Haven for Literary Giants

Located in Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture, Yugawara is a hot spring town cherished by literary figures since the Meiji era. Known as a healing retreat, it has been a place of rest and inspiration for many renowned writers such as Natsume Soseki, Yosano Akiko, Shimazaki Toson, and Akutagawa Ryunosuke, who found inspiration amidst the fragrance of the hot springs and the tranquility of the mountains. Notably, Koda Rohan spent his later years here writing "Yugawara Yori" and "Yugawara Yuki", while Natsume Soseki penned his final work, "Light and Darkness". Yugawara’s springs have served as a creative wellspring, giving rise to countless stories.

A Town of Seasonal Beauty

Yugawara boasts the natural beauty of each season and traditional festivals. In spring, the Yugawara Plum Grove and other plum spots herald the arrival of spring with their rich aromas. Summer nights are magical here with dancing fireflies, while local festivities such as the Yukake Festival in May and the Yassa Festival in August involve both locals and tourists parading through the streets, culminating in lively fireworks. Autumn brings beautiful foliage, and winter offers a chance to rejuvenate in the hot springs.
Yugawara is also famous for its mandarin oranges, whose sweet, juicy flavor is popular with visitors. With 1300 years of history, Yugawara's famous hot springs and seasonal charms continue to draw visitors year after year.
