College Top 25: May 6

Daniel Webster coined the phrase, “There is always room at the top”. However, once you get there, the only way to move is down.  It feels like the top spot in the nation has been a revolving door between the elite few in the SEC and in a league this stout, it is just a matter of time before you get picked off.  So, there was quite a shift in the top-half of this week's poll and there are only two weeks left before conference tournament time.  The pool of potential hosts for the NCAA tournament continues to shrink, so the importance of every win continues to be magnified.

For the first time in 2024, the Tennessee Volunteers (39-9) ascend to No. 1 in the nation as they have won 8 of their last 10 and only sit 1-game out of the lead in the SEC East.  Texas A&M (40-8) lost their first series of the year in Baton Rouge last weekend and dropped to No. 2 this week.  No. 3 Clemson (36-10) moves up a spot as they enjoy a 2.5 game lead in the ACC Atlantic.  No. 4 Kentucky (35-10) shook off the hangover from back-to-back league losses and won a huge series against No. 5 Arkansas (40-9).  By the way, both the Aggies and the Razorbacks are the first teams to reach the 40-win plateau so far this season.

No. 11 Georgia (35-12) is our biggest mover this week after they swept Vanderbilt and have won 5-consecutive games and sit 3rd in the SEC East.  South Carolina (32-15) jumps up to No. 16 this week after winning a road series at Mizzou and are tied with UGA in league standings.  The Texas Longhorns (30-19) are playing some of the best ball in the nation and make an appearance at No. 18 this week as they have revived their season.  Troy (34-15) makes their debut at No. 24 on the heels of winning 8 of their last 10 and are now within 2-games of the lead in the crazy Sun Belt.
