But there really needs to be multiple layers between Mark Davis and the football operation. He can play to his strengths - being the #1 fan sitting in the luxury box strangely wearing knock offs of his dad’s outdated outfits from 1980. And of course his true strength - overpaying others to become interested in being associated with this franchise.
To start, Mark needs to find 2 to 3 high level and proven football execs that he can overpay to have them independently assemble a search committee. This committee will then select a qualified president of football operations who will then independently select a GM. This GM will then select the HC. The HC and GM will build their staff. Mark will stay sequestered at PF Changs for weeks with no knowledge or input in this process. That would put 4 to 5 layers between Mark and the front office & HC. I know, might not be nearly enough layers..……but it’s a start.
We all know this franchise has been a dumpster fire for a very long time, but those flames unfortunately stayed equally hot - especially after Mark became much more involved. Mark of course 1st claimed his independence when he comically hired Gruden - who then ridiculously brought in another TV talking head as "GM". The comedy continued when Mark hired McDaniels, followed by hilariously having his players hire AP.
During this time, Mark also brings in a president for his team who is a lawyer who serves on the Caesar’s Entertainment board and on the Nevada Gaming Commission - absolutely no football experience.
If there can somehow be multiple barriers between Mark and football ops we might stand a chance. Under Mark, whatever positive football brand some strangely believed the Raiders still had has somehow suffered even more.
Case in point: Mark needs this year’s Raider team to win 4 more games to squeak by the previous cumulative 5 yr winning % he "achieved" in his last 5 yrs in Oakland. Remember how bad that last run in Oakland was? Yet somehow a few uninformed fans ludicrously thought a move to a tax free state was supposed to give the team an advantage on improving football outcomes (that’s still funny reminiscing on those weird thoughts some had!). Obviously Mark’s presence trumps that (false) premise because the change of venue and tax status has done nothing for this franchise regarding football success after 5 full seasons.
On field success will always be a steep uphill battle when we have a guy - who self-admittedly claims he knows next to nothing about running a football organization - being an active participant in football decisions. The only time Mark should be allowed to enter the draft room is to briefly drop off Hooters wings.
But we all know this unfortunately won’t happen. We’re stuck with this guy for a while more. Mark is somewhat like a child that just inherited a warehouse of toys that his daddy would never let him touch. Yet Raiders fans can still dream that Mark will somehow wake up and stay very far away from the football ops - as was mandated by his dad way back in the 1970’s when his father was still very much on top of his game.
