Whether you don't celebrate the holiday or simply forgot to pick up that last-minute item, you're in luck—many large retailers stay open on Christmas Day.
For those looking to make a quick grocery run or conduct an urgent present-buying trip, Newsweek has compiled a list of the stores staying open on December 25.
Stores That Are Open on Christmas Day
Some Safeway stores will be open, but others will be closed or operating reduced hours, so shoppers should call their local branch before heading out.
Some Albertsons stores should also be open, but consumers should check first because others may be closed or have a shorter business day than usual.
Many convenience stores and gas stations will stay open. Most 7-Eleven stores will remain open for 24 hours, as they do on any other day. Likewise, most Circle K locations should be open.
Those who have had a Christmas dinner disaster—or those seeking to avoid it entirely—can still get fed because several restaurant chains are open for the holiday.
Denny's will continue serving diners 24/7, while IHOP and Waffle House plan to keep most of their doors open. Most Applebee's locations will also be open, although diners should review their local restaurant's opening hours in case they're subject to change.
Those who must make last-minute stops for medication, gifts or wrapping paper can still head to CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens. However, depending on the location, the drugstores may have reduced opening hours, so it's best to check first.
For the journey home, shoppers can still grab a caffeine fix because several coffee chains, including Starbucks, Dunkin' and Caribou Coffee, are open in some locations.
Stores That Are Closed on Christmas Day
What may be bad news for shoppers will likely be good for store employees. Several large retailers give their workers the day off on December 25 and turn the door sign to "closed."
Retail giants, Walmart, Target, and Costco will shut down on Christmas Day, although the three chains should be open for business as usual on Christmas Eve.
Although Kroger's grocery stores remain open on Thanksgiving and Easter, they are always closed on Christmas Day.
Trader Joe's will also be closed on Christmas Day. However, stores will operate at reduced hours on Christmas Eve, closing at 5 p.m.
Whole Foods also takes the day off for Christmas.
Shopping Is Changing
In recent years, the boom in online shopping has seen some stores struggle to keep up with online retailers such as Amazon, with customers choosing to do their Christmas shopping while sitting at home.
However, some brick-and-mortar brands are proving that many customers still prefer real-life interactions in-store.
However buyers choose to shop, Newsweek has some top tips for Christmas presents for those struggling for ideas.
