Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for July 11.

1) Bob Allison (1934)

Allison earned the first of three career All-Star selections and was named American League Rookie of the Year when he hit .261 with 30 homers and a .815 OPS for the Senators in 1959. The slugger hit at least 29 homers in five of his first six full seasons, but he was often overshadowed by Hall of Fame teammate Harmon Killebrew.

2) Milt Stock (1893)

Stock stands as the only player in MLB history to record at least four hits in four consecutive games. The Brooklyn Robins infielder went 16-for-23 with two doubles and two triples while setting this record June 30-July 3, 1925. He led the NL in singles twice (1920 and ’25). A collision with Lou Gehrig during a 1926 Spring Training game led him to unexpectedly retire at 32 years old. He was the father-in-law of three-time All-Star Eddie Stanky.

3) Andy Ashby (1967)

Ashby was a two-time All-Star who posted a 4.12 ERA over 14 seasons. He won a career-best 17 games while helping the Padres win the 1998 National League pennant. Ashby debuted for the Phillies in 1991 and recorded an immaculate inning, recording three strikeouts over just nine pitches, during his second career start.

4) Javier Lopez (1977)

Lopez was a left-handed specialist who won four World Series rings during a 14-season career. The southpaw won a championship with the 2007 Red Sox and three more with the Giants (2010, ’12 and ’14).

5) Justin Steele (1995)

The southpaw Steele established himself as the Cubs' ace in 2023, his third big league season, going 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA over 30 starts and finishing fifth in the NL Cy Young Award voting while also earning his first All-Star nod.
