Week 9 rec(r)ap

Our performance in Baltimore was like a car crash I couldn’t look away from. The lack of weapons in the offense becomes more prevalent each week. Humphrey, who has been second in targets in the last two games, has given the ball away on back-to-back opening drives. Courtland Sutton managed to churn out 122 receiving yards, the second-highest in his career but we were left to rely on a trick play for our lone touchdown. Javonte Williams led the team with 42 rushing yards on 12 attempts, Audric Estime snuck in 35 more on five carries in garbage time. Frankly, the offense moved the ball down the field well enough they just came up short each time. Too aggressive on offense and too conservative on defense, Payton preached physicality yet our defense looked like they didn’t know tackling was part of the job several times. The loss of PJ Locke has left a gaping hole in the secondary, the Ravens attacked it relentlessly and if he misses another contest in Kansas City then it won't be good. Since losing Singleton the defense hasn’t come out in that crowded defensive line look, known to confuse our opposing quarterbacks. Instead, they rushed four and allowed Lamar to pick us apart from a comfortable pocket, there were hardly any single matchups for Allen to take advantage of & the backend coverage wasn’t containing long enough for any pressure to hit home.

Nix’s drop-back passing game looked as good as it has all year with minimal play-action to work from. Due to an ineffective run game, we turned it over on downs four times. When the run is remotely successful it has opened up the rest of the offense, we are 0.833 when running play-action at least 22% of the time. I believe trading for a receiver wouldn’t improve this offense as much as a receiving threat at tight end would. David Njoku or Evan Engram can beat any linebacker they line up against and 90% of safeties, they also offer immense red zone support. These are two guys you can put on the line, in the slot, or even out wide, and the way Payton utilizes his personnel groups, it would be a match made in heaven. However, with his recent comments, it sounded like he has placed the receiving room in the hot seat out of any position group. As far as the receiving room goes in my opinion, Vele and Franklin need to replace Humphreys targets and the passing attack has to revolve around Sutton. We had the number one red zone receiver in the NFL last year with Sutton who only has two touchdowns so far this year
