About
What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.
don't like picking usernames.
chat.metafilter.com, thesomewhat* totally official chatroom for metafilter. more info under the mefi faq-- there's instructions there on how to log in either:
(1) through your web browser, for example username: "twist my arm@chat.metafilter.com." (remember, all usernames are logged in using only lowercase letters regardless of how you usually log in on mefi proper).
or
(2) using a chat client (aforementioned faq has recommendations and links to software you can install). helpful thread to set up jabber/xmpp-supporting chat client. check the first comment for adium users (mac only; screencaps of fields filled in: 1, 2) or this comment for pidgin users (windows; screencap: 1). instructions but no screencaps for trillian. instructions for xabber on android.
(remember, spaces in usernames on the client need to be replaced with "\20". so my username logs in as "twist\20my\20arm" on a client but "twist my arm" on the browser. also for some folks the first time logging in on a chat client sometimes takes a few tries or a few minutes of weirdness to get into the room, especially if you've just logged out of chat on your web browser. sometimes quitting the program and trying again works.)
