How do I stop gmail from “helpfully” showing updates in priority inbox?

In an effort to reduce inbox clutter and phone notifications, I got really strict with gmail filters to make it so only email from real people end up in my priority inbox. It was great, except . . .

Appreciation and Resurrection

Hey, I was touched and honored by the megapost about my works, such as are currently available. I was going to comment in that thread but I decided a better way to show my appreciation would be to re-launch my post-Brunching clearinghouse of waggery, Bad Gods.

"reform all the tawdry inefficiencies"

"Running Walden Three is not a feel-good exercise. It is a job, and it is a difficult one. We can make an executive love Walden Three, but we can’t make a fool into an executive." "Tomorrow’s Dictator" is a short, dark scifi story by Rahul Kanakia, published in 2012, in which it's hard to hire good brainwashers, er, community managers.

Archive link request

The use of archive sites to get around paywalls has been discussed a few times already. I'd like to foreground a request: when using an archive link, please also include the original link. This is for 2 reasons...

Public Access Television and Free Speech

Opinion analysis: Court holds that First Amendment does not apply to private operator of public-access channels From the majority's opinion: “MNN, as a private actor, is not subject to First Amendment constraints on how it exercises editorial discretion over the speech and speakers on its public access channels.” From the minority's dissent: “Just as the City would have been subject to the First Amendment had it chosen to run the” channels itself, MNN “assumed the same responsibility when it accepted the delegation” to run the channels and must comply with the First Amendment.”

The real story behind the Afghan refugee photo

Photographer Tony Northrup explains the real story behind the iconic cover photograph for National Geographic taken by Steve McCurry (previously). For many; including Tony, the photo was inspirational when it came out in 1984. But there was a darker side to the story (SLYT).

ISO Reference (not recipe) book or website for Instant Pot

I would like a reference book or web site for cooking with an Instant Pot. I want actual guidelines on how to figure out how long to cook things, how to think about natural vent versus fast vent, how to adapt recipes, etc.

Warning Signs

Michelle was 31 and 5'6, the perfect age and the perfect height. She had thick, straight hair, which wasn't a must-have, necessarily, but it was certainly nice. She smiled in every picture, a wide, inviting smile. She had a fine sounding job as a Project Manager and went to a college he had heard of. He messaged "Hey." This wasn’t his best work but it was usually good enough.

Rediscovering the joy of technical work?

When I was young, I loved computing to the point I made it my career. And then came expectations, money, ambition and ruined it. I'm trying to get back into the joy of doing my work for itself, I could use some advice on how to approach this.

What are the economics of small fitness studios, like yoga studios?

A fitness studio near me is coming up for sale and that's got me wondering how profitable they are (in general) as a business. The business type is that they don't have exercise machines or open-gym hours, just classes in the early morning and throughout the evening.

Artefacts

Around one year ago, a journalist I know came across a standard pro-Trump trolling/bot account on Twitter. These are sometimes called “MAGA-head” accounts or similar, and they have bio descriptions that are flavoured with a distinctive soup of patriotism. This account was named @GuntherEaglemann, and Gunther was putatively “Fighting the good fight! #BackTheBlue and Support our Troops, USMC, Conservative | Helping the confused Left turn Right – one at a time”. His location was listed as Texas, USA, and he had 2335 followers. The journalist knew that Gunther Eaglemann did not exist because the picture of “Gunther” was a picture of himself. Once challenged, the account disappeared.

Am I supposed to bag my own groceries?

Where I'm from there were no grocery baggers and everyone just did it themselves. This made sense to me. The checkout person has their job, and I have my job, and we are working together to get me out of there as fast as possible. Now where I live (Northern California) there are sometimes baggers there and sometimes not. When there is no bagger, I can't tell if I'm insulting the cashier by doing the bagging myself, or if I'm pissing them off by not doing the bagging myself. When there is a bagger, I similarly can't tell if I'm insulting them by doing some of it to speed up the job, or being a lazy asshole by standing there on my phone. Please help.

Linking symmetry and conservation laws, she changed physics forever

"It’s not easy to find quotes of Noether reflecting on the significance of her work. Once she made a discovery, she seemed to move on to the next thing. She referred to her own Ph.D. thesis as 'crap,' or 'Mist' in her native German. But Noether recognized that she changed mathematics: 'My methods are really methods of working and thinking; this is why they have crept in everywhere anonymously,' she wrote to a colleague in 1931."

Old Dog Needs New Mac

Graphic Designer asks: Can I use a laptop as my "main" computer? I've been a designer for 20+ years and have used every mac since the original, but I've always had a desktop mac as my go-to machine. Now, it's upgrade time, and I'm thinking of using just a laptop for everything. More inside...

Back to square one.

Bombshell investigation reveals vast majority of landmark cancer studies cannot be replicated. In a shocking discovery, C. Glenn Begley, former researcher at Amgen Inc, and a team working with him, has found that 47 out of 53 so called "landmark" basic studies on cancer -- a high proportion of them from university labs -- cannot be replicated, with grim consequences for producing new medicines in the future. These were papers in top journals, from reputable labs, which achieved landmark status with frequent citations. The consequences for cancer research are far-reaching.

Won't You Share in My Weltschmerz?

I used to write, draw, make funny things that I put out into the world to share with anyone who was interested. I liked forming connections with people, enjoying shared interests and talking about ideas. I liked creating online communities and seeing total strangers develop meaningful connections with each other. Now I just want to hide in my hovel and watch old Buffy episodes while the world burns. How can I regain my desire to engage with humanity?

Kutiman mixes YouTube

Kutiman, the masterful Israeli funk musician and producer, outdoes himself by creating Thru-You: Multiple YouTube clips (mostly instructional and performance videos) edited into slick mega-mashups. They're not just patchwork assemblages, they're sample-based original creations that coud hold their own on anyone's album... Plus they're 100% audiovisual! It's a work of next-level genius.
(sorry for the hyperbole, but my mind has just been blown)
More Kutiman here. Music video here. And for you Pitchfork aficionados, here.
