Comfort me with comfort food

Starting new job on Monday with new (to me) solid 9-5 schedule. What are some vegan-friendly make-ahead meals for Friday nights to avoid spending money on takeout?

Best practices for gathering procedures from subject matter experts?

I need to gather info from subject matter experts from a group at work so that I can document their procedures and reference information. I was wondering if you all had some best practices that I should follow in order to get the most thorough information, while being as helpful as possible.

Where do the ex-New Yorkers go?

I've lived in New York City for many years and am ready to move somewhere else. I haven't traveled that widely within the US though, so I suspect I'm unfamiliar with a lot of cities that might be wonderful places to live but not obvious vacation destinations. I'd love to hear from people - particularly people who have liked living in NYC - who are happy where they live and why!

Fun day trips out of NYC

I just moved to Brooklyn, and my partner and I are interested in getting out of the city for short trips on weekends. We're interested in nature walks and scenic places. Where could we go that fills the following criteria?

Help me medicate my cat without trauma

My aging kitty (as seen here) now gets multiple medications daily, most of which I can sprinkle over a bit of tuna slurry, and she's happy to eat. But she has an occasional pill that ruins tuna for her, and it has also ruined pill pockets for her, so now I'm at a loss for how to give it to her without the traditional approach of poking it down her throat. This is horrible for both of us. Please share any tips you might have for other tricks to make this easy and painless!

How do you research?

I work in public health and have worked on a number of different qualitative and quantitative research projects. I feel like my method of managing and taking notes on background research is sub-optimal and I could dramatically improve my strategy. What do you do?

Good tea menus in London

Where in London can I look over an interesting list of high-quality loose-leaf teas, have one prepared for me at the proper temperature and brewing time, and then sit down and enjoy it on the premises?

Anxious Procrastination. Delaying gratification.

What are your favorite hacks for beating anxious procrastination? How do you delay gratification, in favor of getting things done? I'm looking for anecdata and personal testimony about techniques you use; not so much app recommendations.

Help me destroy our forefathers with Future Noise

I like Skrillex. I'm sorry, but I do. I especially like it when it's all wub-wubs and computer noises and sirens and screaming or Jamaicans saying random things. On a higher level than that, I love the idea that this is the terrifying lurching and aggressive future-music that our grandparents didn't even have the foresight to fear when Rock and Roll was coming on the scene.

Vegan traveling to New Orleans with non-vegan parents

So, have been vegan for just a little while now, and living in San Francisco, it's been great. However, I have a trip to New Orleans planned in a couple weeks which wouldn't worry me that much except I'm meeting my folks there and they're definitely not vegan.

New Year, new spreadsheet for tracking joint and personal expenses

My partner and I have decided to track more accurately our expenses and this task is on me. We are looking for an Excel spreadsheet template that will allow us to track all our expenses by category (groceries, eating out, etc), making a distinction between personal and joint expenses. On top of that, we would like to be able to see clearly who spent how much on what.

Compromise... how does that work?

I am madly in love with my boyfriend and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. But I also desperately miss being single and only being responsible to and for myself. I'm not sure how to cope with this; I don't know whether it's going to get better on its own as we get better at communicating with each other, whether I'm just going to gradually get used to the status quo, or whether I need to mourn that loss of independence and move on with my (generally pretty great) new life (maybe all three).

Specific Portland food recommendations

Looking for a few quick recommendations for my trip to Portland, Oregon this weekend. Ideally I am looking for places reachable by public transit, since I won't have a car. 1 - Best grilled cheese sandwich. 2 - Best dim sum. 3 - Best sushi that isn't insanely expensive. 4 - Best macaroni and cheese. 5 - Best food cart that is hopefully open for lunch on Saturdays. Thanks!

Where should I be shopping? Difficulty level: Dresses

As a woman in her early-mid 30s I'm finding that my old standby clothing sources no longer really work for me, but I have no idea where to go from here. Everything seems to be either too young or too old, and the current silhouettes that are in vogue are absolutely the LEAST flattering to my figure imaginable, so more trendy places seem to be right out. Where should I be buying my casual dresses these days?

What are some audio resources on gentrification and new urbanism?

I'm interesting in better understanding the roots of gentrification (on both a historical level and a systemic level) and what some of the ways that new urbanists, activists, community groups and city planners are working to make cities and small towns more equitable. I know its much more complex than "rich people move in and push the poor out."

Movies that are perfect examples of their genre

After reading so many people say that Die Hard is a perfect (or at least near-perfect) action movie, I've wanted to watch other films that are considered perfect executions of their particular genre. What are the films you consider "perfect"? I'd love it if you could tell me why you or someone else considers them so, but if you can't do that I'm not really fussed.

Veggie meal planning

So, at the omniverous .kobayashi. household, I cook dinner. Last week, my partner has expressed a desire to eat meat no more than once per week. I'm on board, but there's a complicating factor: she will not eat seafood, and has just decided that she does not like tofu. I need help planning out our weekly meals. Can you offer ideas for wonderful cookbooks/websites that would help me to meet these restrictions, and/or (especially) ideas for kitchen/pantry staples and hacks that might help make figuring out our weekly dinners easier?

Healthy Eating for the Anti-Foodie

I need some recommendations on how to eat healthy for the people that genuinely do not like to or have any interest in cooking. I work a lot and I have no interest spending the free time that I do have cooking. I eat out almost every meal and the meals that I do eat at home are usually microwave meals. When you eat out a lot, it can be difficult to find quick healthy options. I am trying to lose a few lbs and probably could stand to eat a little healthier. I am hoping to get some recommendations on how to eat healthy without the usual 'just cook it, it only takes X minutes' or 'its really easy' comments. Not only am I cooking-adverse, the grocery store may be one of my least favorite places. Has anyone tried one of those companies that gives you a weeks worth of food at a time (do you have to cook the food?)? If it is helpful, I am a single guy in my early-thirties living in Georgia. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Surely backpack technology has progressed alongside the laptop?

I'm looking for a men's backpack or messenger bag that exists at some magic intersection of lightweight and strong/durable. This is for daily commuting, often by foot, in New York City. My flashy new devices are impossibly light, and I'm looking for a bag that won't add unnecessary bulk when I carry some or all of them with me.

Beans and Rice and Beans and Rice

I have set myself a goal of paying off my $10k credit card in the next 6 months. After I cut out all luxuries, entertainment, eating out, new items for myself etc, the main variable is food. I have trimmed the fixed payments where I can and accepted the ones I can't. I need to feed myself, my partner, my 9 year old daughter and my dog. Please help me do this as cheaply as possible! Short term pain, long term gain and all that.

Need a Manhattan Italian Restaurant

Need Epic Italian restaurant in Manhattan. This may have been asked before but restaurants change and close all the time. Relatives are coming into Manhattan this Friday from Texas (originally from Long Island) and seek "epic pizza and Italian food". I know places in Brooklyn etc so please only Manhattan. They have a family of 4 and subways to Bensonhurst would be prohibitive. Special "Awesome Points" for "hole in wall" tiny places. Mifi-ites don't let me down!

Looking for a replacement for Googledocs

O hai! I'm a Google avoider. I've managed to not use Gmail, and to stop using Google as a search engine. I do have a Google account, but I use a separate browser to log into that, and log out and close the browser when I'm done. My online Google-avoiding life would be complete if only I could find a good replacement for Googledocs, preferrably free.

New York Theatre District deli/restaurant shout-outs?

Taking an older relative to see a Broadway matinee this Saturday, on 45th between Broadway & 8th Ave. We'll be hungry for lunch, but the selection of restaurants is overwhelming and I'd love a few suggestions. A good deli is ideal, but mainly looking for a place we can sit without too much waiting, with reasonably pleasant surroundings and good food. Thinking restaurant rather than lunch counter, someplace with table seating. Price is not the most important variable, so this need not be a rock-bottom bargain. As my relative is not able to walk quickly, I'm looking for something within a block or so of the theatre. Thank you!

Planet Earth-esque documentaries focusing on cities, etc.?

I love Planet Earth, Life, and other documentaries that David Attenborough is associated with -- as much for the educational value as for the beautiful cinematography and show-not-tell approach. They're works of art in and of themselves. Are there any documentaries in a similar vein that focus on cities, architecture, landmarks, and other human creations? For example, it would be incredible to explore Tokyo through the same lens!
